Subtraction
by Janie Lazo
We once had a Sub in our Chemistry Class
She wasn't our first - but I fear- we're her last
Yes something went haywire - she misread a fraction
And we soon learned  Math could cause quite a  reaction
The test tube was oozing all icky and gooey
We heard a big boom then it all went kerflooey
Though covered in muck - we thought it was great
That Sub was a BLAST - she was really first rate
It was a bit messy -  she left us too soon
Now she orbits the Earth with our lab rat named June

CANDLE

A burning candle dares envelop
Fiery glowing hopes ignite
Justice, kinship, liberation
Maverick's necessary oblique plight
Quintessential restoration
Steadied torches unified
Vanguard's wildfires- xeno's yearning
Zealousness applied

BELLS

Bell is a shiny metal word
It clangs across alpine meadows in a
Moo-ving musical of bovine adventure.
It jingles from a rooftop on a snowy winter's eve-
A magical promise of stockings stuffed full.
Laced to a shoe bell speaks of growth and change-
A tinkling beat of toddling first steps; a
reminder  of fleeting moments gone too soon.
Bell whispers on the wind -God is waiting; Come.
In a musical language of chimes and tones -Bell pleads.
Find me...
     Follow me...
           I am here...

Walls

For 'ere our views be twixt
Our visions firmly fixed
We go our separate ways
Our paths will not be mixed

We stand alone in vain
Both strong yet none does reign
But at the corner waits
A bond most strong when twain

Nothing Left

The holidays came- oh the treats that they brought.
I simply can't diet- I should - but I'm not!
I’ve munched on the cookies and bright candy canes
I ate and I ate till just crumbs now remain.
I loved every minute- enjoyed every bit!
But I need a new wardrobe as NOTHING will fit!

ANTS

Oh tiny mound of sandy earth
How did you come to be?
Each single grain - a curious birth
This work, I did not see.
But greater still the mystery
what goes on below?
A maze of grains placed gingerly
By workers strong and slow.
Success by pure resilience
These workers carry on.
Ants crafts their homes with brilliance,
Hard work from dawn to dawn.
In single file they march along
Their tasks they must fulfill.
I wonder if they sing a song
When working on their hill

Pumpkin’s Peril

My life is cumbered by this vine.
I pray you'll take me- make me thine.
To end my days of lonesome lust-
My life - to you I do entrust.
I pray you'll give my form a face
And take me to my resting place.
That special day is oh so near
When ghost and goblins do appear.
My light will guide them on their way
My life work done , alas the'll  say
"Trick or Treat!”

MOM

You  grasp my hand
I pull away.
In toddling steps, I run, I play.
You hold me close,
I squirm and squeal.
So much to see; to smell; to feel.
You linger as I head to class
Just go, I say- my tone quite crass.
You sit up late- you pace the floor.
I silent pass- I close my door.
You see my tears - you hear me cry.
You worry, fret, and wonder why.
Just leave me be! What do you know,
Of love and boys and how things go?
Time marches on- I move away
Our visits brief- a week- a day.
We've changed it seems- not you- but I.
I'm not sure when, or how, or why.
But now alas- I clearly see
A love most pure- you shared with me.
You grasp my hand- I grasp yours too.
So much I want to say to you.
I need advice- to you I turn-
From your experience I can learn.
My mom- my friend - my confidant
A love I need, and deeply want.

MY VALENTINE SO GRAND

A tattered card grasped tightly in my nervous sweaty hand.
I pass her desk- not once- but twice-My Valentine So Grand.
FEAR you are a trickster that whispers in my ear
You slyly say she’ll laugh at me whenever I go near.
I saved my best for only her but your words have me shaking.
The thought I’ll be a laughing stock does have my insides quaking.
But then I hear a louder  voice that drowns the voice of fear
It wells up in my belly and it tells me “I AM HERE!”
Yes Courage comes to meet me and takes me by the hand.
I place my card upon her desk- My Valentine So Grand.
She grasps my card so tenderly and then I see her smile.
And fear retreats - this trickster sly- was lying all the while.

WONKY WISHES

There was an Irish farmer and his name was Duff McGill
He spent his days out in the fields- content he was- UNTIL
The day he heard a tap, tap, tap- He knew his luck had shifted
A Leprechaun was in his trap- a prize the God’s had gifted
He hardly could believe it- T’was infeasible to think
That all his dreams would soon come true in just one spritely blink
He snatched the little fellow up and held him in his hand.
He leaned in close- spoke loud and slow so he would understand
“Just grant me my three wishes, sir- and I will set you free!”
And just like that each wish came true just as Duff did decree
He wished for Fame- Enormous Growth- A Throne on Which to Sit
Then POOF the Leprechaun was gone- Three Wishes- That was it
Now Duff is famous- that’s for sure- Yes people stop and stare
They can’t believe the growing size of Duffy’s derriere
And even with a Golden Throne he has no place to sit
For Duffy’s rump- big as a barge- just simply will not fit!

CATERPILLARS

Poems are like Caterpillars
Inching along, munching on words
Growing, changing, maturing
They hide in a modest chrysalis of creativity
Until on wings of wonder they take flight
And share their  brilliance with a waiting world

Ode To A Seashell

I see you hiding there-  a  shimmer in the waves beneath my feet
I wriggle my fingers deep into the wet sand and feel the whole of you
Deep ridges -  smooth curves - A spiral of mystery  waiting to be discovered
I lift you to my ear and hear the song of the sea that lives within you
I breathe in your briny goodness - taste the salt spray on my lips
I wonder- Who will call you  home?
Toss me back and we shall see

Bananas for Bananas

Bananas for Breakfast-Bananas for Lunch,
Then more Bananas for snacks that I munch.
Bananas for supper-Bananas in Bed
Then dreams of Bananas that dance in my head.
I do love bananas -They go down with ease
And they’re easy to reach since I live in the trees.
The smell of bananas is ripe on the breeze.
And I do love bananas like all Chimpanzees

CAT

I crave her silky softness
As her slender body moves
Graceful passes so alluring
Still my touch she dares reprove
When I call to her she listens
But to hasten? no not she
Though I beckon - she ignores me
Too aloof to hear my pleas
So I sit alone in silence
I'm no fool, I shall not beg
Then this flighty, flirty, vixen
Soon is rubbing on my leg

Bed For Sale

One bed for sale
It’s going cheap
One fluffy, bouncy place to sleep
It’s just like new
But I won’t keep it
It has monsters underneath it

Poetry Place Blog - by Janie Lazo

Welcome to the Poetry Place! I will be adding my poems here from time to time. I hope you enjoy reading them and look forward to sharing my poetry with you. Some of my poems were borne out of my participation in the Madness Poetry Tournament. Others were the result of writing prompts from Today’s Little Ditty. But most were written just because. Just because I got a silly thought in my head and just couldn’t resist turning it into a poem.  My hope is that these poems will bring a bit of joy to all who read them. Thanks for stopping by.
